We published so far one paper, which targeted acute myocardial infarction. We screened the short term risk for this condition for all possible medications. We found no major hitherto unknown major adverse effect of pharmaceutical drugs in this regard.
If we successfully reveal previously unknown potential side effects and drug-drug interactions, that could not only lead to a renewal of methodology in pharmacoepidemiology and register-based epidemiological research but might have a major public health impact and could result in a substantial increase of knowledge in pharmacology and in different medical disciplines.
As of yet there are no consequences yet. So here we can just describe the potential for such consequences. The core idea of the present project is to apply methods which were successful for genome wide association studies to fully exploit the potential of the newly created registers on prescribed drugs and the possibility that drug information can be linked to other health registers both in Norway and in Sweden. As with the human genome, our physiological knowledge regarding all the potential effects of and interactions between pharmacological agents is rather limited. By applying methods that allow systematically examine all potentially existing associations between drugs and their combinations and possible health outcomes, we might reveal potentially important side effects and drug-drug interactions that otherwise might go undetected.
Systematic assessment of prescribed medications and short-term risk of myocardial infarction - a pharmacopeia-wide association study from Norway and Sweden.
