MI Lab is one of four Centres for Research-based Innovation [SFI] in the area of medicine and health in Norway. In MI Lab seven industrial partners, St. Olavs Hospital, SINTEF and NTNU are working together in an open research and innovation environment that covers research in MR, ultrasound and image-guided surgery. In 2011 MI Lab recruited many high quality researchers, and at the end of 2011 MI Lab financed 31 on-going PhD students/ post docs and 6 international guest professors. The MI Lab hired PhD and post doc students obtain experience in medical R&D in the crossroad between university, industry and hospital, and will be a future pool for recruitment of high-quality personnel for Norwegian industrial R&D, health care and academia. MI Lab wants to be an integrated part of the total ultrasound and MR research environment in Trondheim, and the experience so far is that the interaction is excellent between the MI Lab hired PhD and post doc students and the rest of the medical imaging community in Trondheim. We like to call this the “MI Lab family”. The Research Council of Norway (RCN) evaluated the 14 Centres for Research-based Innovation in 2010, and cited from the international expert panel report: “The current and proposed research activities of the MI Lab are excellent and cover very well the current medical needs of improvement in ultrasound imaging, MRI and image guided therapy” “Novel opportunities are being picked up, such as nano-particle based imaging and drug delivery” “The Centre aims to act as a melting pot that is both multidisciplinary and, importantly, bridges academia, the clinic and business. This approach is critical to product innovation in the medical technology area.” In 2011 three MI Lab inventions were licensed to GE Vingmed Ultrasound and they will soon appear as new methods in their cardiac ultrasound products. The inventions cover better methods for assessment and quantification of cardiac valve leakage, and cardiac wall imaging with a time resolution of app. 1000 images per second. A main success story for MI Lab has been the new pocket-sized ultrasound scanner from GE Vingmed Ultrasound, Vscan, and in 2011 three scientific papers demonstrate the clinical benefit of using Vscan on new patients at admittance to the hospital. The studies were performed at Levanger Hospital 80 km from Trondheim. One study (Skjetne et al. European Journal of Echocardiography 2011;12:737-43) included 119 patients admitted to the cardiovascular unit, and it was found that in 55% of the patients Vscan was useful for the patient management, and in 16% of the patients Vscan enabled correction of the diagnosis. Another study (Mjølstad et al. European Journal of Internal Medicine, in press) included patients admitted to the internal medicine unit and used Vscan for both cardiac and abdominal ultrasound. Their main conclusion was: “By adding a pocket-sized ultrasound examination of < 10 min, we made important diagnostic changes in 1 of 5 patients, resulting in a completely different treatment strategy without time delay”. The MI Lab partner Medistim ASA obtained in 2011 an official recommendation in the United Kingdom of the health benefits of the ultrasound system VeriQ: “The case for adopting the VeriQ system in the National Health System (NHS) for assessing graft flow during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is supported by the evidence. The evidence suggests that intra operative transit time flow measurement may reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality. The VeriQ system is associated with an estimated cost saving of £115 per patient.” Vscan and VeriQ confirm the MI Lab vision that innovations in medical imaging can facilitate cost efficient health care and improved patient outcome at the same time.

MI Lab (Medical Imaging Laboratory, www.ntnu.no/milab) was appointed by the Research Council of Norway in 2007 as one of three Centres for Research-based Innovation [SFI] in the area of medicine and health in Norway. In MI Lab eight industrial partners, St. Olav’s University Hospital, SINTEF and NTNU are working together in an open research and innovation environment that covers research in MR, ultrasound and image-guided surgery. In 2010 the Research Council of Norway evaluated all the Centres for Research-based Innovation, and the international expert panel evaluated MI Lab to be excellent. Some citations from the evaluation report: • MI Lab started up rapidly and efficiently and now produces results of world class quality that are bound to result in important innovations in medical imaging. • The current and proposed research activities of the MI Lab are excellent and cover very well the current medical needs of improvement in ultrasound imaging, MRI and image guided therapy. • Novel opportunities are being picked up, such as nano-particle based imaging and drug delivery. • The competence of the involved partners is at a very high profile and suitable for the research tasks. • MI Lab has an excellent publication profile • The MI Lab PhD students and post docs constitute an interesting interdisciplinary mix of engineers, physicists, mathematicians and physicians that has the potential to lead to a very fruitful innovative environment. • The Centre is hosted within a “showpiece” facility within St Olav’s. It is justly proud of this facility. The co-location of researchers, business within the clinical environment of the hospital is perhaps the best method of giving the opportunity for the necessary informal communication between all stakeholders. • The importance of the interactions of the Centre with the hospital cannot be over- emphasised. The industrial partners recognise these as the key advantage that the Centre has when compared with its international competition. • The University has taken the strategic approach of creating an integrated facility – this is to be applauded and should be recognised as a benchmark for others.
2009
4. Avansert MR i klinisk diagnostikk. Toppsjefen for GE konsernet, Jeff Immelt, valgte selv å gjøre denne verdenslansering under en teknologikongress i New York, og Vscan ble av Time Magazine kåret til den 14. viktigste oppfinnelse i verden i 2009.
2008
